Northern Irish novelist Lucy Caldwell told the Guardian's Books of My Life series that rereading Ulysses in an edition without notes was one of the great reading experiences of her life.
The Guardian printed an extract of Cherise Saywell's Ditto under the award story: a phone booth, seven houses, a train to Sydney at 7:32 p.m., and a woman who will not use his nickname.
Edinburgh-based writer Cherise Saywell won the 2026 BBC National Short Story Award for "Ditto." The prize is 15,000 pounds. Shortlisted writers receive 600 pounds each.
